Maribor
Maribor (pronounced [ˈmaːɾibɔɾ]; also known by other alternative names) is the second-largest city in Slovenia with about 96,000 inhabitants in 2015. It is also the largest city of the traditional region of Lower Styria and the seat of the City Municipality of Maribor.
Name
Maribor was attested in historical sources as Marpurch circa 1145 (and later as Marchburch, Marburc, and Marchpurch), and is a compound of Middle High German march 'march (borderland)' + burc 'fortress'. In modern times, the town's German name was Marburg an der Drau (literally, 'Marburg on the Drava River'). The Slovene name Maribor is an artificial Slovenized creation, coined by Stanko Vraz in 1836. Vraz created the name in the spirit of Illyrianism by analogy with the name Brandenburg (cf. Lower Sorbian Bramborska). Locally, the town is known in Slovene as Marprk or Marprog. In addition to its Slovene and German names, the city is also known as Marburgum in Latin and Marburgo in Italian.

2014–15 NK Maribor season
The 2014–15 season was Maribor's 55th season of football and its 24th consecutive season in the Slovenian PrvaLiga, Slovenian top division, since the league was created in 1991 with Maribor as one of the league's founding members.
After the successful 2013–14 season where Maribor won the PrvaLiga and Supercup titles, the club continued with their dominance in domestic competitions during the 2014–15 season and has managed to add another two titles among club honours; they have won their 13th League and their fourth Supercup title. Unlike the previous season when they were runners-up in the Slovenian Football Cup, this season Maribor was knocked out from the competition one round earlier when Celje defeated them 3–2 on aggregate during the semi-final of the 2014–15 Slovenian Football Cup. The club did particularly well in the UEFA competitions where they went undefeated during six matches of the 2014–15 UEFA Champions League qualifying campaign and, for the first time in 15 years, have managed to secure a spot among the elite 32 clubs in the competition proper. There the club was drawn into a group with Chelsea, Schalke and Sporting, and has managed to drawn each of them once, winning a total of three points in the process. For manager Ante Šimundža this was the second time he had a taste of the elite competition with Maribor, as he was the club's player during their 1999–2000 campaign.

This week I traveled to a city in Slovenia you've likely never heard of: Murska Sobata. I went with my friend to stay on Friday night and then on Saturday we drove to Maribor, Slovenia to visit the Christmas Markets. It was my first time visiting Maribor, and it is a beautiful city sitting right on the Drava River. My goal in visiting Maribor was to capture a bit of the country of Slovenia outside of the normally traveled places like Ljubljana and Lake Bled. I have been trying to get into more of the cities that are hidden gems in Slovenia. Therefore, this week I was in Maribor. The Maribor Christmas Market was outstanding. The voting on "Europe's Best Destinations" from over a half million travelers ranked Maribor as the 3rd best city to visit in Europe. Stating that it is a charming cultural, culinary, and educational center. And I’d say it’s a pretty underrated city overall. Maribor is definitely one of my favorite cities I’ve visited so far! The city is a MUST when you visit Slovenia! Today, I am going to start my adventures in the city center which is one of the most beautiful city centers in Slovenia. I will take you around the city, point out some of the important places you should check out and lastly we will go wine tasting!
Did you know Maribor is home to the OLDEST VINE in the world?! At over 400 years old, the vine at the Old Vine House still produces wine!

The Pohorje mountains, which are green and surround Maribor, are a great place to spend time in nature. It is a great place for hikers, cyclists, and horse riders because there are so many beautiful forest trails, peat moors, and vine roads. Pohorje is one of the best places to ski in the country during the winter. On the way to the mountains, tourists can stop at tourist homesteads and vineyards that serve homemade food and wellness centers in the mountains that offer spas and places to relax.

Maribor is a town that not only keeps alive great Slovenian traditions, but also makes room for people of other cultures. Romani Kafenava is the first Romani restaurant in the European Union. Its goal is to reduce prejudices and stereotypes about Roma people among the locals and give the Roma people a place to show off their culture, language, and food. The inside is decorated with unique Romani art, colorful tablecloths, and vases in a rustic style.

Before taking part in the tasks, each person is tested on the ground. The bravest guests will be taken 14 meters above the ground, which is the same as being at the top of a six-story building.

Lent is the oldest part of Maribor, and it shows off the town's rich cultural history the best. The town's big fortress was built in the 1600s and can be seen from Usnjarska , one of the oldest streets in the city. Because there were leather shops on this street hundreds of years ago, it was known as the dirtiest street in town. Now, the street leads people all the way through the Jewish district, past the Water Tower. The Judgement Tower is another interesting part of the fortress. It has to do with the witch trials that used to happen in Maribor.

Maribor's past is closely linked to the river Drava and the bridges that cross it. In times of peace, bridges were a sign of the city's wealth and power because many trade routes went through it. One of the most beautiful bridges in the Austro-Hungarian Empire was the Old Bridge, which was built at the start of the 20th century. It was hurt during World War 2, but in 1998 it was finally fixed up.

This week I traveled to a city in Slovenia you've likely never heard of: Murska Sobata. I went with my friend to stay on Friday night and then on Saturday we drove to Maribor, Slovenia to visit the Christmas Markets. It was my first time visiting Maribor, and it is a beautiful city sitting right on the Drava River.
My goal in visiting Maribor was to capture a bit of the country of Slovenia outside of the normally traveled places like Ljubljana and Lake Bled. I have been trying to get into more of the cities that are hidden gems in Slovenia. Therefore, this week I was in Maribor.
The Maribor Christmas Market was outstanding. They were selling food, traditional desserts, and my favorite mulled wine. I tried a cinnamon roll there as well as the mulled wine to compare to the wine I had at the Ljubljana Christmas Market and in Kranjska Gora. The cinnamon roll and the wine were delicious.
My favorite part of the trip to Maribor was seeing the Basilica of St. Mary. It was absolutely stunning, and it towers over the city like a mother keeping watch. Maribor is the second largest city in Slovenia, but in comparisons it felt extremely small. I think this was mainly due to the fact that very few people were in the center. It seemed that the entire city had swarmed the mall. I guess everyone was buying last minute Christmas Gifts.
The fascinating thing I saw in Maribor was the oldest grapevine in the world. It was 400 years old. This grapevine is a quite popular supplier of extraordinary wine. The grapevine spanned the entire length of the building, and it was fed by the Drava River.

This city was voted a top-3 European destination last year. It’s Maribor, Slovenia! The voting on "Europe's Best Destinations" from over a half million travelers ranked Maribor as the 3rd best city to visit in Europe.
Stating that it is a charming cultural, culinary, and educational center. And I’d say it’s a pretty underrated city overall. Maribor is definitely one of my favorite cities I’ve visited so far!
It’s the second biggest city in Slovenia and has so much to offer. It is very relaxed, clean, green, and an overall great place to visit. Plus it is smaller than many cities in Europe so it’s very affordable as well
We spent a few days here and are already looking forward to coming back in the future. Slovenia is such an amazing country that I’ll always continue coming back to.

In this week's travel vlog we visit Slovenia for the first time. We explore Maribor and eat the best Slovenian food.
We start our day at Malca Mimogrede, where we eat delicious Slovenian soup and dumplings drink local wine. We admire the city and can't believe how beautiful Maribor is. We stop at Hiša Stare trte where the oldest vine in the world is located. At Pekarna & Fast Food Bajro we enjoy some Slovenian desserts, such as the famous Bled cream cake. We only walk a few steps down the road before finding another Slovenian food staple at Pri malem Karlu: Štruklji. We devour a sweet version with juicy blueberries. We admire the Basilica of Our Mother of Mercy and Maribor Castle. We also get to witness the Slovenia Carnival Kurentovanje. Finally, we end our day La Cantina where we eat local meat and cheeses with lard dip, Istrian pasta and a Pizza with Styrian toppings.

Maribor is the second-largest city in Slovenia and the largest city of the traditional region of Lower Styria. It is also the seat of the City Municipality of Maribor, the seat of the Drava statistical region and the Eastern Slovenia region. Maribor is also the economic, administrative, educational, and cultural center of eastern Slovenia.
Maribor was first mentioned as a castle in 1164, as a settlement in 1209, and as a city in 1254. Like most Slovene ethnic territory, Maribor was under Habsburg rule until 1918, when Rudolf Maister and his men secured the city for the State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs, which then joined the Kingdom of Serbia to form the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. In 1991 Maribor became part of independent Slovenia.
Maribor, along with the Portuguese city of Guimarães, was selected the European Capital of Culture for 2012.

Welcome to the most underrated city in Slovenia - MARIBOR!
Maribor is Slovenia's second largest city situated along the Drava River. It is just 1,5 hour drive from the capital of Ljubljana and can be also reached by train! The city dates back to 12th century and you will find many historic buildings throughout the city!
The city is a MUST when you visit Slovenia! Today, I am going to start my adventures in the city center which is one of the most beautiful city centers in Slovenia. I will take you around the city, point out some of the important places you should check out and lastly we will go wine tasting!
Did you know Maribor is home to the OLDEST VINE in the world?! At over 400 years old, the vine at the Old Vine House still produces wine!

The Pohorje mountains, which are green and surround Maribor, are a great place to spend time in nature. It is a great place for hikers, cyclists, and horse riders because there are so many beautiful forest trails, peat moors, and vine roads. Pohorje is one of the best places to ski in the country during the winter. On the way to the mountains, tourists can stop at tourist homesteads and vineyards that serve homemade food and wellness centers in the mountains that offer spas and places to relax.

Maribor is a town that not only keeps alive great Slovenian traditions, but also makes room for people of other cultures. Romani Kafenava is the first Romani restaurant in the European Union. Its goal is to reduce prejudices and stereotypes about Roma people among the locals and give the Roma people a place to show off their culture, language, and food. The inside is decorated with unique Romani art, colorful tablecloths, and vases in a rustic style.

Those who like a lot of excitement should go to the Altitude Polygon. Daring visitors who don't have a fear of heights or speed can try the Giant Swing, wall climbing, the Pillar of Courage, the Hanging Bridge, and steel cables. Before taking part in the tasks, each person is tested on the ground. The bravest guests will be taken 14 meters above the ground, which is the same as being at the top of a six-story building.

Lent is the oldest part of Maribor, and it shows off the town's rich cultural history the best. The town's big fortress was built in the 1600s and can be seen from Usnjarska , one of the oldest streets in the city. Because there were leather shops on this street hundreds of years ago, it was known as the dirtiest street in town. Now, the street leads people all the way through the Jewish district, past the Water Tower. The Judgement Tower is another interesting part of the fortress. It has to do with the witch trials that used to happen in Maribor.

Explore the Drava River
Maribor's past is closely linked to the river Drava and the bridges that cross it. In times of peace, bridges were a sign of the city's wealth and power because many trade routes went through it. In times of war, bridges made the city a strategic center in Europe. One of the most beautiful bridges in the Austro-Hungarian Empire was the Old Bridge, which was built at the start of the 20th century. It was hurt during World War 2, but in 1998 it was finally fixed up.

This week I traveled to a city in Slovenia you've likely never heard of: Murska Sobata. I went with my friend to stay on Friday night and then on Saturday we drove to Maribor, Slovenia to visit the Christmas Markets. It was my first time visiting Maribor, and it is a beautiful city sitting right on the Drava River.
My goal in visiting Maribor was to capture a bit of the country of Slovenia outside of the normally traveled places like Ljubljana and Lake Bled. I have been trying to get into more of the cities that are hidden gems in Slovenia. Therefore, this week I was in Maribor.
The Maribor Christmas Market was outstanding. They were selling food, traditional desserts, and my favorite mulled wine. I tried a cinnamon roll there as well as the mulled wine to compare to the wine I had at the Ljubljana Christmas Market and in Kranjska Gora. The cinnamon roll and the wine were delicious.
My favorite part of the trip to Maribor was seeing the Basilica of St. Mary. It was absolutely stunning, and it towers over the city like a mother keeping watch. Maribor is the second largest city in Slovenia, but in comparisons it felt extremely small. I think this was mainly due to the fact that very few people were in the center. It seemed that the entire city had swarmed the mall. I guess everyone was buying last minute Christmas Gifts.
The fascinating thing I saw in Maribor was the oldest grapevine in the world. It was 400 years old. This grapevine is a quite popular supplier of extraordinary wine. The grapevine spanned the entire length of the building, and it was fed by the Drava River.

This city was voted a top-3 European destination last year. It’s Maribor, Slovenia! The voting on "Europe's Best Destinations" from over a half million travelers ranked Maribor as the 3rd best city to visit in Europe.
Stating that it is a charming cultural, culinary, and educational center. And I’d say it’s a pretty underrated city overall. Maribor is definitely one of my favorite cities I’ve visited so far!
It’s the second biggest city in Slovenia and has so much to offer. It is very relaxed, clean, green, and an overall great place to visit. Plus it is smaller than many cities in Europe so it’s very affordable as well
We spent a few days here and are already looking forward to coming back in the future. Slovenia is such an amazing country that I’ll always continue coming back to.
So if you ever have the chance I’d highly recommend visiting Maribor, Slovenia.

In this week's travel vlog we visit Slovenia for the first time. We explore Maribor and eat the best Slovenian food.
We start our day at Malca Mimogrede, where we eat delicious Slovenian soup and dumplings drink local wine. We admire the city and can't believe how beautiful Maribor is. We stop at Hiša Stare trte where the oldest vine in the world is located. At Pekarna & Fast Food Bajro we enjoy some Slovenian desserts, such as the famous Bled cream cake. We only walk a few steps down the road before finding another Slovenian food staple at Pri malem Karlu: Štruklji. We devour a sweet version with juicy blueberries. We admire the Basilica of Our Mother of Mercy and Maribor Castle. We also get to witness the Slovenia Carnival Kurentovanje. Finally, we end our day La Cantina where we eat local meat and cheeses with lard dip, Istrian pasta and a Pizza with Styrian toppings.

Maribor
Maribor (pronounced [ˈmaːɾibɔɾ]; also known by other alternative names) is the second-largest city in Slovenia with about 96,000 inhabitants in 2015. It is also the largest city of the traditional region of Lower Styria and the seat of the City Municipality of Maribor.
Name
Maribor was attested in historical sources as Marpurch circa 1145 (and later as Marchburch, Marburc, and Marchpurch), and is a compound of Middle High German march 'march (borderland)' + burc 'fortress'. In modern times, the town's German name was Marburg an der Drau (literally, 'Marburg on the Drava River'). The Slovene name Maribor is an artificial Slovenized creation, coined by Stanko Vraz in 1836. Vraz created the name in the spirit of Illyrianism by analogy with the name Brandenburg (cf. Lower Sorbian Bramborska). Locally, the town is known in Slovene as Marprk or Marprog. In addition to its Slovene and German names, the city is also known as Marburgum in Latin and Marburgo in Italian.
